Shanghai locates in the non-central heating area of China. The current part-time and part-space free-running heating mode formed in residential building is the reason why energy consumption for heating is still at a low level. Investigates the energy consumption of 224 residences which use air source heat pump air-conditioners for heating. Meanwhile, surveys the indoor thermal environment and comfort in two group of 10 residences each respectively using air source heat pump air-conditioners and gas boiler plus floor radiant heating system. The results show that the residents can improve the thermal comfort by using heating equipment, while the heating energy consumption remained at a very low level and the indoor environment is worse under the current free-running heating mode. The energy consumption will significantly increase with the increasing usage of full space heating equipment, at the same time, the change of heating mode will gradually change the thermal adaptation of the residents, which will bring about the opportunities and challenges of industry development.
